The XXII winter Olympic games are scheduled to take place from Friday 7, 2014 till Sunday,23rd February 2014, in Sochi, Russia.
This will be the first time that the Russian federation will
host the winter Olympics, the former USSR under Leonid Brezhnev was the host of
the 1980 summer Olympics. The Russian Federation under president Vladimir Putin
is keen to use Sochi as part of a re-branding exercise, to show the progress it
has made in recent years.
The Olympic torch symbolizing the union of different nationalities made history as the first games torch to be taken on a space walk. Those who had the honour of carrying the Olympic flame during the torch relay include the world’s first female cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, four time Olympic gymnastics champion Alexei Nemov, three times Olympic synchronized swimming champion Maria Kiseleva, Paralympics bronze medalist Aleksey Chuvashev, cardiovascular surgeon Maksim Strakhov and popular blogger Sergei Dolya.
98 events in 15 disciplines of 7 winter sports will be held during the course of the winter Olympics. These are:
1. Biathlon
2. Bobsleigh: Bobsleigh and Skeleton
3. Curling
4. Ice Hockey
5. Luge
6. Skating: Figure Skating, Short Track Speed, Speed Skating
7. Skiing: Alpine, Cross Country, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, Free Style and Snowboard.
